What does a motorcycle cost per kilometer? The real figures next to a car

Dapper Motor

Everyone quotes the fuel price, because it is the number on the big sign by the road. But fuel is only one line in the real cost of getting somewhere. Add up everything, and the per-kilometer truth about a motorcycle versus a car is even more lopsided than the pump suggests.

A note up front: this article is general information, not financial advice. Costs vary with model, mileage and riding style. Treat the figures as a guide.

Fuel is the headline, not the whole bill

A motorcycle is often two to three times as economical on fuel as a typical car, which we cover in why a motorcycle is far cheaper to ride. That alone is a big gap. But to know the real cost per kilometer, you have to add the other lines and divide by the distance you actually ride.

The lines that make up the real number

A fair cost per kilometer includes the variable costs, fuel, tyres, maintenance, and the fixed costs, insurance, road tax and depreciation, all divided by your annual mileage. On almost every one of those lines a motorcycle is cheaper: less fuel, lower premiums, low fixed road tax as we explain in road tax for motorcycles, and cheaper consumables. The lines are smaller, so the total per kilometer is smaller.

Depreciation is the hidden giant

The cost people forget is depreciation, and it is often the biggest of all. A vehicle that loses value fast carries a heavy depreciation cost per kilometer no matter how little fuel it uses. Here a good custom quietly wins twice: it holds its value, as we cover in buy-back guarantee and residual value, so the depreciation spread across your kilometers stays low.

Why the per-kilometer view matters

Looking at cost per kilometer instead of just the purchase price or the fuel price is how you see the truth. It is the number that decides whether a vehicle is a sensible daily tool or an expensive habit. For a motorcycle, and especially a value-retaining custom, that number tends to be small and stable.

The bigger picture

Cost per kilometer is the engine room under the whole affordability story. For the business side, where deduction and VAT lower it further, read the complete guide to riding a custom motorcycle through your business, and get your own net figure on the business riding page.

Reminder: general information, not financial advice. Costs vary with model, mileage and riding style.

Frequently asked questions

What does a motorcycle cost on average per kilometer?+

That depends on the model and your riding style, but the sum of fuel, insurance, road tax, maintenance and depreciation for a motorcycle is generally much lower than for a comparable car. Look at your own figures, because use and mileage make the difference.

Which costs do you include per kilometer?+

The variable costs such as fuel, tyres and maintenance, plus the fixed costs such as insurance, road tax and depreciation, divided by your annual mileage. Only then do you get a fair picture instead of just the fuel price.

Does depreciation really count?+

Yes, and it is often the largest item. This is where a good custom wins: because it holds its value better, the depreciation per kilometer is lower than a fast-depreciating vehicle. That lowers the real cost.

How do I work it out for myself?+

Add your annual fixed and variable costs and divide by your annual mileage. For the business side, the calculator on the business riding page quickly gives you a net ballpark based on your situation.
