Why Dapper Motor exists: our story and our mission

The Dapper Motor Story and Our Mission

Sometime in 2015, I was standing in a garage in Haarlem with an old BMW R80 that had just as many problems as it had character. The thing ran, but not well. The clutches were sloppy, the lighting was mediocre, and the tires should have been replaced two years ago. But what really bothered me? I couldn't find anywhere that someone truly understood what I wanted to achieve with this bike. This story – the Dapper Motor story and our mission – starts there.

A Frustration Becomes a Mission

Most places where you could buy parts felt generic. They sold the hundredth helmet from some manufacturer with no story behind it. The hundredth set of lights without knowing if it was actually better. And most importantly: nobody seemed to understand that a classic BMW isn't just a motorcycle. It's a statement. It's something you build, improve, and perfect over years.

I started gathering friends around the workbench. Mechanics, designers, riders. We all had the same frustration. We didn't want the most popular parts – we wanted the best. And we wanted to buy them from people who actually rode with them.

That's when the Dapper Motor mission took shape: setting up a webshop for people who see their bike not as transportation, but as an extension of their personality.

Why Classic BMWs Were the Beginning

The K75, K100, K1100, R80, and R100 aren't our focus by accident. These bikes have something you don't get in new motorcycles anymore – you can actually repair and modify them yourself. There's no computer behind every part you want to change.

These bikes are also old enough to have character, but young enough that they haven't completely fallen apart yet. That makes them perfect for someone who wants to grow as a rider and builder. You learn from them.

And honestly? There's an entire community of people riding the same bikes. People who know that a well-tuned Hagon suspension can make the difference between "I ride in it" and "I feel connected to this machine."

The Dapper Motor Story: Quality Above All

When we started selecting brands, we had one criterion: would I install this on my own bike?

That's how we ended up with brands like Kellermann, Motogadget, DMD, Roeg, Holy Freedom, and YSS. These aren't names you see in every shop. These are brands with real expertise behind them.

The Brands We Trust

Lighting: Kellermann turn signals aren't cheaper than basic alternatives, but they're better. They last longer, they look more authentic, and they fit perfectly on a bike where you want attention to detail. The same goes for Motogadget – their work speaks for itself.

Helmets: DMD helmets are handmade in Germany. When you put a DMD on your head, you feel it. There are no shortcuts. And Roeg helmets? They're designed by people who ride the same bikes as you. They understand what you need.

Clothing: Holy Freedom gloves and jackets aren't cheap, but they're built to age well. After three years, they look better, not worse.

Suspension: A YSS or Hagon suspension set is an investment you can feel. The difference between a standard fork and good suspension is the difference between riding and really riding.

This is what the Dapper Motor mission means: quality you can trust.

More Than a Shop

Over the years, Dapper Motor has grown, but not in the direction of "more products" or "getting cheaper." We grew toward better understanding what you need.

We regularly organize meetings with other riders. We share experiences about what works and what doesn't. We listen to what people are building, and then we try to better provide what they need for it.

The Dapper Motor mission was never just about selling parts. It's about building a community of people who share the same values:

  • Maintenance over consumerism: Better to set up one bike really well than three bikes half-done.
  • Authenticity: Your bike doesn't need to look like everything on Instagram. It needs to look like you.
  • Longevity: Buy products that will still be useful when you look at them twenty years from now.
  • Sharing knowledge: Not everything needs to be a secret. If you've learned something, share it.

Why Haarlem?

We're based in Haarlem not by accident. Haarlem has a history with motorcycles. People still ride around here on the same bikes their fathers rode. Here, people understand what it means to maintain something.

And practically speaking: we can meet people. You can stop by, bring your bike, take a look together at what's needed. You can try on a helmet before you buy it. You can talk to someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

The Future of Dapper Motor

We're expanding carefully. We're looking at new brands – not because they're trendy, but because they're better. We're experimenting with new services. But we'll never lose that core value: this is for the rider, not for the money.

The Dapper Motor story and our mission continues as long as there are people who really want to understand their bike. As long as there are riders willing to spend a bit more for something that lasts twice as long. As long as there are people who work on their bikes because they love the work itself, not because they have to.

Those are the people we exist for.

Stop By and See Us

This story isn't finished. It writes itself every day, in every garage where someone works on a BMW, in every ride where someone trusts a good set of Kellermann lights, in every community that exists around these bikes.

If you share the same values – if you see your bike not as consumer goods but as a project – then you're exactly where you belong. Come visit us in Haarlem, send us a message, or see what we have. We'd love to help you make your bike better.

That's the Dapper Motor story. That's our mission. And it can't exist without you.

Frequently asked questions

When was Dapper Motor founded and why?+

Dapper Motor was born in 2015 in a garage in Haarlem. An old BMW R80 with many problems was the starting point – not the bike itself, but the inability to find good advice and real expertise on how to make that motorcycle truly excellent. We wanted to fill that gap.

What makes Dapper Motor different from other motorcycle shops?+

We focus entirely on what we know: BMW classics, cafe racer builds, and the best parts for them. We work with brands like Kellermann, Motogadget, YSS, Hagon and Holy Freedom. No bullshit, no trends – just real motorcycle knowledge and parts that work.

Which BMW models do you specialize in?+

We focus on classic BMW boxer engines: K75, K100, K1100 and the R80, R100. These engines have character and the potential to become truly beautiful. With the right lighting (Kellermann, Koso), good suspension (YSS, Hagon) and quality parts you can create something special.

What is the Dapper Motor philosophy?+

We believe that a well-built motorcycle is more than just parts. It's about knowledge, feel, and understanding what you want to achieve. We don't build for trends – we build for riders who can, want to, and dare to ride their motorcycle. That's our starting point.
