From donor to business asset: how a Dapper build comes together for business

Dapper Motor

Every business asset has an origin story. Most of them are dull: an order, a delivery, a line on the balance sheet. A custom motorcycle is the rare exception. It starts as a forgotten machine and becomes both a tool for your business and an object you are proud to own. Here is how that journey runs at our atelier in Haarlem.

A note up front: the tax points here are general information, not tax advice. Confirm anything tax-related with your own accountant or tax adviser.

It starts with a conversation

Before any spanner is lifted, we talk. How do you ride, where, how far, and what do you do for a living that this motorcycle will be part of. What style speaks to you. What is the budget. A build is not a product off a shelf, it is a plan shaped around a person, and the conversation is where that plan begins.

Choosing the donor

Most Dapper builds start with a BMW K-series or R-series donor: machines that are reliable, characterful and ripe for transformation. We find one that suits your direction, and from that day the forgotten bike has a future. The teardown begins, and the build takes shape from the frame outward.

Built by hand, documented throughout

Builder Rik brings the precision of a decade on Bentley and Rolls-Royce to every motorcycle that comes through the doors. The frame is assessed, the engine refreshed, the bodywork shaped and painted, the seat stitched. And the whole process is documented, from bare metal to first ride, exactly the kind of material that makes your build double as content, which we cover in your build as content. You can see finished examples on the signature builds page.

When it becomes a business asset

Once you acquire and use the finished motorcycle for business, it takes its place as a genuine business asset: on the balance sheet, depreciated over time, possibly eligible for investment deduction, as we describe in investment deduction and your business motorcycle. The documentation and the build quality both help it hold its value, which we cover in buy-back guarantee and residual value. A forgotten donor has become a hand-built machine that works for your business and your name.

The bigger picture

From donor to business asset is the story that ties the whole case together: the craftsmanship, the documentation, the tax advantages and the marketing value. Frequently asked questions

How does a Dapper build start?+

With a conversation. We want to know how you ride, what you do and the style you have in mind. Then we choose a suitable donor, usually a BMW K-series or R-series, and build the plan around your wishes and budget.

Is the build documented?+

Yes. We document every build from donor to road-ready, from the teardown and the paintwork to the first ride. That documentation is great for your own content and helps with value retention and your records.

How does the motorcycle become a business asset?+

Once you acquire and use the motorcycle for business, it can go on the balance sheet as an asset, with depreciation and possibly investment deduction. You confirm the tax treatment with your accountant. This is general information, not tax advice.

How long does a build take?+

That depends on the wishes and the condition of the donor. A build is bespoke, so we give you a realistic timeline up front. Better done well than rushed: the result should last for years and hold its value.
